The Beginning and Ends of Story
The beginnings and endings of stories can make what happens in the middle of the story seem more important and more magical. Beginnings and endings allow you to feel like you went somewhere magical or learned something. In the class activity the students produce simple Instagram stories that feature beginnings and ends in addition to the classic Instagram shots of being in the middle of a concert or at a cool place. The assignment shows how even in this tiny form of Instagram storytelling, putting an entry shot as one is going into a restaurant or an ending reaction as they are leaving can make the experience seem more magical. We also talk about how since story is so fluently understood you can actually get away with a lot of "holes" in your story with good beginnings and ends.
Story Forms
This is a general review video of the many different "story forms" or "madlibs" that Professor Campbell teaches in class. From the Pixar Story Spine to writing songs to logically debating morals, the video shows how simple story forms can be the foundation for quality and student creativity. Professor Campbell also has a mini-rant about how he thinks education fails to often give students enough structure when it comes to creativity and uses examples from his time at Disney, Netflix, UnitedHealth, and academia to show that even the most creative places in the world start with story forms.
